Tribal Art - Judith Miller

"The course of 20th-century Western art was irreversibly and dramatically altered by African art. The black arts of Africa have been described as shocking, sublime, bold, severe, dynamic, restrained, and expressive by connoisseurs in the West. These beautiful objects were created by enormously diverse cultures, across a continent inhabited by hundreds of millions of people - a product of not one, but many "Africas". Picasso little understood the religious nature of the African sculptures he collected. For him, the aesthetic qualities alone were overwhelming enough. We should not only look at, but also look into an object, to appreciate the cultural meaning of the work, and better understand the people who produced it". - Judith Miller

This book not only covers African tribal art, but also the tribal art of Oceania and The Americas. Just by flipping quickly through the pages of wonderful photographs, it clearly becomes apparent how there are so many similarities. It is a refreshing revue of tribal art!

The African section of the book is broken down into 3 geographic areas;

WEST AFRICA which includes Guinea and Sierra Leone, Liberia and Ivory Coast, Ghana, Mali, Burkina Faso, Nigeria and Cameroon

CENTRAL AFRICA covering the countries of Gabon, Congo River Basin and Angola

EAST AND SOUTH AFRICA which includes Ethiopia, Kenya, Somalia and South Africa.

Factual and historical text throughout the book is concise, to the point, and certainly not over-bearing, and the maps of each geographic area are excellent. The book is a visual delight, the pictures are superb!

Another great feature which is of help for many collectors and indeed owners of African art, is that Judith as far as possible has given a value to the featured pieces. This serves as an excellent reference point to value similar pieces you may own, and it would certainly be useful as a comparison to what you see offered on the internet for example.

There is also a very useful Glossary, and list of dealers and auction houses which includes all of their contact details.

A highly recommended addition for anyone who enjoys tribal art.
