Similar to the Aquaba fertility doll produced by its Northern Ashanti neighbors, the Fanti doll is carried by women who are asking the gods for a child. Unlike the circular Aquaba doll, the Fanti doll is rectangular.
Although the Fanti and Aquaba dolls are produced by two different tribes, there is a belief that they are actually a pair and that women wanting a boy should carry the Fanti doll and if they want a girl they should carry the Aquaba doll. |
