Dogon doors are basically carved doorways and are a significant part of ancient West African life. The doors were initially designed to show social standing of the household.
For the Agrarian societies of West Africa, grainery doors are an especially important representation of wealth and prosperity of the farmer.
The Dogon people of Mali have created an art form in their grainery doors. Most of these doors have statuettes carved within them which symbolize the ancestors who guard the harvest held in the grainery.
The ones below are specifically hand carved for use as wall decor by the same artists who make the larger functional doorways in Mali.
