Goli mask - large

The Baule are part of the Akan people from Ghana and the Ivory Coast. They migrated westwards from Ghana three centuries ago as the Ashanti rose to power. This mask is representative of a second group of Baule masks, this kplekple mask is one of the great abstractions in African art. The face is flat, the eyes have an oval frame, the mouth is rectangular, and the mask has two horns. The round head is said to stand for the sun, and the horns for the buffalo, the symbol of fecundation. The mask was used at commemorative, agricultural and burial ceremonies. The mask wearer communicates with the supernatural at these rituals.
