The Ntwana are a small tribe from Mpumalanga, which is home to the massive Kruger National Park game reserve on the eastern border with Mozambique. The Ntwana women are the custodians of tribal traditions and have to sustain their rural economy whilst the men migrate to the larger cities to work.

In this society there is a large emphasis on marriage and motherhood. Women are only regarded as adults once they have given birth to their first child. Only then can they own their homestead and wear traditional clothing, beaded neckbands, smocks and decorated aprons. The bicycle seat (tlhotshwana) hairstyle is peculiar to this tribe, worn by women and male initiates where androgyny is vital to their transitional status.
