African Walking Canes

African Walking canes are very important to us. Purchasing one of them helps sustain many of our artisans and their families.

African Walking canes are an essential part of rural African culture and daily life. When one considers how these communities are located in the African bush amongst many wild and dangerous animals, the cane is essentially used as a protective weapon. They have also taken on symbols of prestige and tokenism. Many tribal chiefs would use them much like a mace when presiding over important functions.

As is the case with all of our art, each cane is hand carved, and these are a very popular category. They make terrific gifts and display items of interest, whether grouped in a collection or mounted on the wall.

The canes from Ghana are typically made from lighter sese wood, and the heavier canes from Kenya are made from mvuli wood.

We also have some African walking sticks made from Ebony wood which happens to be one of the most expensive woods in the world and is found in East and West Africa in addition to other countries. African canes made with this wood tend to be more expensive.

Our newest addition to this category is the African Staff. These are Apprx 68" long or Apprx 6 Feet tall. They come in 3 seperate pieces due to the length of the staff. They are fairly easy to put together in one piece by just joining the two ends together. (We recommend using a strong glue on both ends prior to attaching the pieces together for a strong bond.)

These canes and staffs are for decorative use. Do not use them as a medicinal walking aid.
